British FM says Russian veto is `deeply disappointing`

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said on Tuesday that Russia`s decision to block the new mandate for the UN Observer Mission in Georgia is `deeply disappointing.`
Miliband said in a statement issued on Tuesday on Russia`s decision to block the new mandate that Russia has used its presence on the Security Council `to pursue its own narrow interests.`
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia Monday vetoed an extension of the mandate of the UN mission in Georgia.
Russia has turned its back on previous Resolutions, one as recent as February, in which it affirmed its commitment to uphold Georgia`s territorial integrity and sovereignty, Miliband said in the statement.
He said Russia should withdraw its troops to pre-conflict positions, participate constructively in the Geneva talks on a negotiated settlement, and ensure access for humanitarian aid and full respect for human rights in areas under Russia`s de facto contro
