Separatist leader of South Ossetia seeks unity with Russia
02.08.09 11:45
A year after Russia and Georgia fought a war over South Ossetia, the leader of the rebel enclave of South Ossetia on Saturday told Reuters he wanted to unite his people with Russia. Eduard Kokoity called on the Kremlin to deploy more troops and weapons in the breakaway region.
`We will be determining how to live and who to live with. Today we are an independent and recognised state. We will build our own state, despite all economic difficulties, we will be building our statehood, but I want to stress it once more, we will be in alliance with Russia and together with Russia. The time will come, and I am not excluding that, one day we will be part of Russia. I do not exclude it at all as it is the wish of the majority, overwhelming majority. You understand that 98 percent of South Ossetian citizens are Russian Federation passport holders. And the West should respect this fact.
`Taking into account the policy which Georgia pursues today together with Georgia`s allies, who have certain geopolitical interests in the region, I think that there is not a big enough presence of Russian troops on South Ossetia`s and Abkhazian territories. Though I am not responsible for Abkhazia and this is just my personal opinion. And this also includes having more serious weaponry. We need it not only to rebuff aggression on South Ossetia or Abkhazia, but to maintain stability in the Caucasus`, Eduard Kokoity said.
